Caring for young people who self-harm

Location: Online via zoom

In this 2-hour workshop, Garry King will address the topic of “Self-Harm – Non-Suicidal Self-Injury”.

Garry will explore what self-harm is, why it happens, and what you as a carer can do.

The workshop, like the one presented by Garry last year, will include:

  • who is most at risk
  • specific strategies to reduce and prevent self-harm
  • protective factors
  • risk factors
  • what to say, what to do, who to link with and when
  • what to look for / signs of self-harm

The Presenter Garry King has extensive experience working with young people, as a teacher, youth worker and counsellor. This experience is complimented by degrees in welfare, education, counselling and suicidology. His most recent book, authored with Mary Margaret Kerr, is “School Crisis Prevention & Intervention.”

Children and young people should not be present during this presentation nor have access to the notes.

The session is designed for kinship, foster and permanent carers.
