Childhood Safety with Kidsafe Victoria

To begin the month of March, the Carer KaFÉ team sat in on a very informative webinar hosted by Kidsafe, focused on keeping children safe from accidental injury. Presented by Kidsafe Victoria CEO, Melanie Courtney on March 1, the workshop provided an overview of child injury prevention within areas of the home, road, water, play, and product safety, and uncovered that each year over 150 Australian children (aged 0-14 years) are killed, and over 68,000 are hospitalised as a result of unintentional injuries, or better known as accidents. In addition to this, unintentional injuries account for about 88% of all injury-related deaths in children, making learning about risks and prevention as important as ever.

With homes being the most common location where children are injured, and drowning being one of the leading causes of accidental death for Australian children under 5 years of age, Kidsafe Victoria has devised a website full of resources and education material to minimise the level of risk and consequence of injury to children.

As a result of over 70% of child car restraints being incorrectly fitted or used, the Victorian State Government has committed $4 million to deliver a new, state-wide program of free child car restraint checks. Through the 'Safe Seats, Safe Kids' program, parents and carers are also invited to book in for a FREE child car restraint fittings and safety check in their Local Government Area HERE.

Whether it’s a guide to kids' safety on the roads, an information sheet on childhood drowning, or a checklist for home safety, the Kidsafe website has all the guidance you need to keep your children safe!
