Moments of the Months at Carer KaFÉ

As many of our learning and development opportunities still proceed in a safe space online, carers continue to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary to care for vulnerable children in home-based care with Carer KaFÉ! Much like others, the past few months have been very busy as we continue to facilitate online sessions where our incredible trainers provide their expertise through Zoom.

September saw valuable sessions from ‘Why do they do that? – Understanding and responding to behaviour in young children 0-8 years of age’ to 'Nikara’s Journey', where carers followed the story of Nikara and her non-Aboriginal foster parents.

On Thursday, September 24, we welcomed presenter, positive Psychologist, resilience coach, and founder of The Mindfulness Advantage, Michael Pace, for a session of Fostering Resilience which focused on how carers can find stability during times of stress by increasing wellbeing outcomes for themselves and their young people. Michael’s session was so well received by our carers and we were inundated with positive feedback.

"Thanks so much, Michael - this was a beautifully calming, positive webinar - I wrote a good few notes which shows me I was learning.  I especially like your angle of seeing emotions as 'data'.  Just in doing that you can take yourself outside what is happening which helps with perspective. It was a lovely space to be in for nearly two hours - a treat and a boost."

"He is a real person with a real past real feelings and knows what it’s like to have grown up as a kid in care. He is one of my favourite speakers. He gives me hope and inspiration. I love what he has to offer us. HOPE! Thank FCAV and Michael :)"

October continues to see many valuable opportunities for our carers, including Part 2 of Richard Rose’s Therapeutic Parenting on Wednesday 14 October which follows Part 1, delivered on Wednesday 7 October.

Richard Rose is an Honorary Associate of Berry Street, as well as a leading expert on Therapeutic Life Story Work and working with ‘hard to reach’ children and young people. This session is focused on communication strategies and understanding where the child’s behaviour comes from, whilst providing the tools necessary to manage challenging situations.
