Carer Q&A Session #1: Avoiding (surviving) an allegation whilst providing care (CIMS process) (Online) - EVENING SESSION

Foundations of care

Foster Care Association of Victoria Q&A Series for carers

What would you do if there is an allegation raised over the care you provided for a child or young person?

Carers often feel blindsided when the quality of the care they provided is questioned by an authority and bewildered about the investigative process involved.  In Victoria the Department of Families, Fairness & Housing (DFFH) introduced in 2018 the Client Incident Management System (CIMS) for responding to allegations.

Join Tessa & Deb from the Carer information & Support Service (CISS) and learn:

  • common themes of allegations and strategies for avoiding them
  • overall understanding of the CIMS
  • what support is available should the CIMS process be activated

“Surviving an allegation is challenging for carers as their agency follows the CIMS process and it is common for carers to experience delays, especially if it is with the police. There is also a perceived conflict of interest – where on one hand agencies are meant to be supporting their carers but at the same time could be investigating them. Carers have reported that they feel devalued, will no longer care and that there is no focus on strengths they have”.   Tessa Hughes FCAV CISS Manager

Please note that Carer KaFÉ can cover the cost of babysitting while you attend a Carer KaFÉ training session.  You need to organise for an approved babysitter via your agency.  This needs to be organised and approved by Carer KaFÉ at least one week prior to the training session.
