Kids’ Takeover at the Library

The State Library will transform into an interactive and colourful playground for children. From the forecourt to the Quad, the State Library Victoria will be bursting with creative activities and mind-expanding experiences for kids and their grownups.

Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

State Library Bricktoria: treasure hunt

28 January – 30 January 2022

A treasure hunt with a twist!

Join us for a site-wide trail exploring spaces across the Library, where visitors will follow clues on a treasure map and collect LEGO® bricks for their own take-home model. 

Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Only participants will need to purchase a ticket.

The treasure hunt takes between 30 and 45 minutes to complete.

The Gecko and the Mermaid: Djerrkŋu Yunupiŋu and her Sister

17 December 2021 – 25 April 2022

Geckos, turtles, lizards and mermaids! This summer’s NGV Kids exhibition introduces two significant contemporary Yolŋu artists from Northeast Arnhem Land to the youngest of visitors.

Award-winning artist Ms N Yunupiŋu and her sister Eunice Djerrkŋu Yunupiŋu share their stories, culture and language through displays of art and hands-on activities developed especially for the exhibition.

MPAVILION

Australia’s leading architecture and design event will occur online from 23 November and then in person at MPavilion designed by MAP studio (Venice) from 2 December onwards. 

After being the world’s most locked-down city, Melbourne will host MPavilion's biggest season yet, with 152 days of free events including talks, workshops, performances, family-friendly experiences, community projects and installations, and more.

New Year's Eve Celebrations

New Year’s Eve in the city is offering up lots of fun ways to safely ring in 2022.

Ticketed Celebration Zones will be set-up across Alexandra Gardens, Docklands, Flagstaff Gardens and Treasury Gardens, offering family-friendly entertainment, live music and amenities. Each zone will also feature early evening and midnight fireworks displays, and in the Docklands zone, a spectacular drone swarm show.

Tickets will be required to access the NYE Celebration Zones; they are free and available through a ballot system. Registrations close 11.59pm, Sunday 12 December.

IMAGINARIA

Imaginaria, an experience of imagination, technology and play, has extended its stay.

Fully interactive bespoke sounds, scents and lights activate in response to your movement as you walk, slide and glide through the dreamlike landscapes. Walk into a giant inflatable bubble, navigate a futuristic light maze or jump into a cosmic abyss.

The experience is part audio visual installation, part game and 100 per cent future.

Disney: The Magic of Animation

Discover the creativity and innovation of almost 100 years of Disney Animation.

Shown in Australia for the very first time, this exhibition contains original sketches and rare artworks from 1928 to the present day, including the latest release Raya and the Last Dragon, exclusive to Melbourne.

See over 500 artworks from your favourite animations. Discover how animators use colour to express emotions, and the technical skill of crafting character and storytelling. You can even step inside a scene from the Disney classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

BENDIGO - EAGLEHAWK ‘MULGA BILL’ PLAYGROUND

Eaglehawk is an outer suburb of Bendigo and its most famous resident is fictional! Remember Mulga Bill, as imagined by Australian poet A.B. Paterson in his poem ‘Mulga Bill’s Bicycle’?

The Eaglehawk Playspace is a huge playground built beside Lake Neangar that’s inspired by the Banjo Paterson poem and the name of the suburb.

BALLARAT - LAKE WENDOUREE ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND

The enormous Lake Wendouree Adventure Playground is an absolute must-see for kids!

The playground is built completely from wood and has so much fun equipment, including slides, multiple kinds of swings (a wheelchair access swing as well), monkey bars, forts, climbing structures, steering wheels, tunnels, and much more.

WARRNAMBOOL - GIANT YAMBUK SLIDE

What could be more exciting than a slide that goes for 33m! Situated just outside Port Fairy this giant metal slide is on the banks of Lake Yambuk and is a perfect spot for a family day out. Kids will love going (continuously) on the slide and parents will love relaxing by the lake and maybe enjoying a spot of fishing. GEELONG - SERENDIP SANCTUARY

Serendip Sanctuary is part of an Aboriginal cultural landscape in the traditional Country of the Wadawurrung Peoples. Parks Victoria respects the deep and continuing connection that Wadawurrung Traditional Owners have to these lands and waters, and we recognise their ongoing role in caring for Country. 

Serendip Sanctuary is a wildlife oasis close to Melbourne where you can see kangaroos, wallabies, emus and a huge variety of birdlife. The sanctuary is a protected home to hundreds of native animals, including rare and endangered species.

SHEPPARTON - MULANA NIN IYOGA WALKING TRAIL, MOUNT MAJOR

This 4.6km return walk offers lovely views to the north and west as you move up the slopes to the peak of Mount Major offering views of Dookie and surrounding hills, Dookie Agricultural College and the ranges to the south and east. Interpretive signs along the trail provide an insight into the area's rich cultural history.
