SUPPORTING EDUCATIONAL SUCCESS OF YOUNG PEOPLE IN CARE, NAVIGATING SCHOOL CHALLENGES

Specialist topics

This workshop is designed to help carers understand the barriers to educational success for children and young people in care as well as develop strategies for supporting young people with their education and advocating for their rights in the education system.

Carers should leave this workshop feeling empowered to support young people with their education and to advocate for their rights in the education system.

Through this workshop carers will gain:

  • Understandings of the rights of children and young people in out of home care with regards to educational access
  • A definition of educational success
  • Strategies they can use to support the young person to make positive connections with their school, increase (or maintain their attendance), and work together to increase their academic performance
  • Strategies to use when interacting with school staff supporting the child or young person

Participants will also be provided with access to the PDF of the slides for future reference

This is the second of our online workshops of the year to be presented by Megan Corcoran of the Wagtail Institute. Megan spent many years teaching and leading in schools for young people who have experienced trauma and significant disadvantage. She has also studied a Masters in Applied Positive Psychology, investigating how belonging can provide healing and improve outcomes after experiences of childhood trauma. Megan has expertise in trauma-informed practice and her work is grounded in wellbeing science. She works as a lecturer of positive psychology at Monash University, teaching post-graduate psychology students theory, research and wellbeing interventions.
