CARING FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WHO SELF-HARM
This two-and-a-half-hour workshop will engage participants in the topic of "Self-Harm - Non-Suicidal Self-Injury".
It will clearly explain what self-harm is, why it happens and what you, as carers, can do about it.
The workshop will address:
- who is most at risk
- strategies to reduce and prevent self-harm
- protective factors
- risk factors
- what to say, what to do, who to link with and when
- what to look for - signs of self harm
The Presenter Garry King has extensive experience working with young people; as a teacher, youth worker and counsellor. He combines this lived experience with degrees in welfare, education, counselling and suicidology. He has worked as the youth welfare consultant for the Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention, was appointed as Adjunct Lecturer in Youth Welfare at the Central Queensland University and is the recipient of a Churchill Fellowship to the USA. Garry has written a number of books on youth welfare and presents at national and international conferences. Gary’s most recent book, “School Crisis Prevention & Intervention,” has been released in the USA. Garry continues to work with young people as a school counsellor and at a homelessness service. He is a father and grandfather.
