Yarning Space - Session 1

Caring for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Children

Understanding Aboriginal history + how it impacts on contemporary Aboriginal people in 2024

(First in a series of 3 yarning spaces. Carers are welcome to register for 1, 2 or 3 sessions. Other sessions 9 May and 16 May)

Date: Thursday 2 May 2024

Time: 8pm - 9pm

Location: Zoom online

Aboriginal people have lived on the landmass now known as Australia and called it home for many thousands of years. History as we may have learnt it, is not always as it seems. Truth-telling and storytelling are two key concepts that are now used to discuss this history, and the continuing impact that this has on contemporary Aboriginal people in 2024.

Join with AJ Williams-Tchen, a proud Wiradjuri / Wotjobulak Social Worker, Nurse and Youth Worker, Director of Girraway Ganyi Consultancy, nominee for Australian of the Year Victoria 2024 and winner of the Social Worker of the Year 2023 (Allied Health Awards) as he discusses Aboriginal history and how it impacts on contemporary Aboriginal people then opens up the discussion for a yarn.

A 20 minute presentation followed by 40 minutes of yarning, facilitated by AJ.

This session is designed for kinship, foster and permanent carers.
